Level 1: Introduction to Symbol Work and Sandplay Therapy
Open to any mental health and or health professional working with clients in a creative way or interested in creative therapies.
Sandplay therapy creates a bridge between the conscious and unconscious. Dora Kalff describes it as a “pathway to the psyche and in the hands of a properly prepared therapist, it is a powerful, invaluable modality”.
This two-day training opportunity is the beginning foundations of a creative expressive therapeutic modality.

In this introductory training Jean and Carina will introduce the origins of sand-tray as a therapeutic modality and applications for across a wide range of populations.
Training will include:
• The history of sand-tray and its theoretical underpinnings
• Differentiation of sand-tray from Sandplay Therapy
• Common applications of sand-tray as a therapy modality
• Understanding various ways that symbol work and sand-tray can be used in assessment, therapy and supervision
• Using symbols without sand as well as sand-tray with children and young people
• Adaptations of sand-tray across therapeutic modalities (psycho-dynamic, CBT, narrative therapy, trauma processing models)
• Use of sand-tray for reflective practice and in supervisionThis two-day workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to engage in creating their own directed sand-trays. There is a maximum number of attendees in order to allow small experiential groups, and for all participants to create their own tray and the observers to practice reflective responses.

Level 3: Sandplay therapy: Clinical practitioner
“The Sandplay method takes the limited therapeutic possibilities of language into account with great seriousness and offers alternative means of psychic expression” Dr Martin Kalff (2003).
Sandplay therapy creates a bridge between the conscious and unconscious. Dora Kalff describes it as a “pathway to the psyche and in the hands of a properly prepared therapist, it is a powerful, invaluable modality”.
This two-day workshop has been designed specifically for clinicians who are already incorporating supervised Sandplay as an adjunctive modality into their clinical practice. Pre-requisites are completion of Level 2 and current use of sandplay in clinical practice. and continuation to engage in regular Sandplay supervision

A psychotherapeutic, long term, insight-oriented therapy based on work of Dora Kalff and the Psychology of CG Jung.
This two-day training expands on Level 2. Content includes:
- Jungian Foundation – Structure of the psyche continue from Level 2; Individuation; Complexes.
- Working with children and teens – Neuro-developmental theory relating to both age groups; Teen case vignettes.
- Working with adults – Ego strength; Diverse client groups; Contraindications; Adult case vignettes.
- Developmental stages in sandplay process.
- Case studies showing discussion topics e.g. trauma and attachment.
- Training opportunities within and outside of Aotearoa – Broadening your knowledge of Jungian Psychology and Kalffian principles e.g. day courses on specific topics.
- The purpose and necessity of engaging in one’s own Sandplay process.
- Assignment to encourage reflective case study and practice: Choose One Book to review and Sandplay Journal paper review (*1 extra day attendance credited on completion of assignment).

- Two-day Introductory training preferably with Jean, Carina or STANZA/ISST teacher
- Qualifications and current practicing certificate in Counselling, Psychology, Psychotherapy or Creative Therapies
- Basic understanding of psychotherapy / depth psychology
- Willingness to engage in regular Sandplay supervision

- The theories that differentiate Kalffian Sandplay Therapy, a psychotherapy, from Sand Tray as a modality
- Jungian Foundation: Structure of the psyche and archetypes
- Case studies to illustrate the theories
- Undirected experientials in pairs to implement observational skills
- Co-transference
- There is a maximum number of attendees in order to allow experientials, and for all participants to create their own trays and the observers to practice reflective responses.
